How to get your life insurance licence in Alberta

The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) runs the LLQP exams at its own offices in Calgary and Edmonton and publishes its fees in full, which makes Alberta the easiest province to budget. You can write all four modules in one day, ask for the exam in French, and you have 12 months after passing to file a paid application through the AIC portal.

The exams at the AIC

The exam centres are at the AIC offices in Calgary and Edmonton. The AIC page does not mention online sittings. All four modules can be written in one day, which is useful if you travel from Red Deer or Lethbridge, though a 300-minute day is demanding: try a full practice day at home first.

The format is the national one. Life Insurance, Accident and Sickness, and Segregated Funds and Annuities: 30 scored questions plus 5 unscored pilots, 75 minutes each. Ethics and Professional Practice: 20 scored plus 5 pilots, 75 minutes. 60% on each module.

The AIC describes the exam as closed-book, with approved study material available on an electronic reader. Ask the AIC what the reader contains before relying on it. In practice, prepare as if you had no material: searching a reader during a two-minute question rarely pays off.

Who writes in Alberta

Candidates from Calgary, Edmonton and the rest of the province, but also people who will work in Alberta after training elsewhere. If you completed your LLQP course in another province, check with the AIC that your course certificate is accepted and still inside its 12-month validity before you book.

Writing in French

The LLQP exam can be written in French in Alberta, on request made to the AIC in advance. Ask when you register, not on the day.

Full Life program$100

A&S program$50
A&S program rewrite, per module$50
Ethics (Québec Civil)$100

What a rewrite really costs

The full Life program costs $100 for all four modules, but each rewrite costs $100 per module. One failed module doubles your exam fees. Two failures triple them.

Example

A candidate in Edmonton writes all four modules in one day for $100. He passes Life, A&S and Segregated Funds, and fails Ethics with 11 out of 20. The rewrite costs another $100. He must wait at least 24 hours, and the rewrite must happen while his course certificate is still valid. Total exam fees: $200, before any travel.

The rewrite policy is the national CISRO one: up to 3 rewrites, 24 hours apart, then a one-year wait and a new course after a fourth failure. See LLQP retake rules by province.

Questions

Can I write the LLQP exam online in Alberta?

The AIC lists exam centres in Calgary and Edmonton and does not mention an online option on its LLQP page. Ask the AIC if you need an alternative.

Is the exam fee refundable?

No. The AIC states that its exam fees are non-refundable.

Can I write only the A&S modules?

Yes. The A&S program costs $50, with rewrites at $50 per module. See the A&S-only licence route.

What happens if I miss the 12-month deadline?

The certification is valid for one year. After that, contact the AIC about your options before rebooking anything.

One day or several?

Writing all four modules in one day at the AIC saves a second trip to Calgary or Edmonton. It also means 300 minutes of exams, and Ethics, the module with the least margin, may land at the end of the day when you are tired.

One day suits you if

Your practice exams are at 70% or more on every module, you have done a full four-module practice day at home without your scores dropping in the afternoon, and travel to an AIC office is long or expensive.

Several sittings suit you if

One module is still close to 60%, you have not tested your stamina over five hours, or you want to use a first result to adjust how you study the rest. A&S and Life on one day, then Segregated Funds and Ethics on another, is one sensible split.

Whatever you choose, remember the clocks: the course certificate is valid 12 months from completion, and the paid licence application must follow within 12 months of passing.

Prepare before you book

With fees charged per module on every rewrite, the cheapest preparation is to book only when your practice scores are well above 60%.
