LLQP frequently asked questions

Short, sourced answers to what candidates ask most about the LLQP exams, licensing in the common-law provinces and our preparation. Each answer links to the page with the full detail. Facts checked October 21, 2026.

The exam

What does LLQP stand for?

Life Licence Qualification Program. It is the course and exam program required for a life or accident and sickness insurance licence in every province and territory except Québec, harmonized nationally through CISRO.

How many modules are there?

Four for the life licence: Life Insurance, Accident and Sickness Insurance, Segregated Funds and Annuities, and Ethics and Professional Practice (common law). Two for the A&S-only licence: A&S and Ethics. See modules and licence types.

How many questions are on each module, and how long is it?

Life, A&S and Segregated Funds: 30 scored plus 5 pilot questions. Ethics: 20 scored plus 5 pilot. Every module lasts 75 minutes. Questions are multiple choice with four options and one correct answer.

What are pilot questions?

New items being tested for future exams. They do not count toward your score and are not identified, so you answer every question as if it counted.

What mark do I need to pass?

60% on each module, and every required module must be passed. That is 18 of 30 scored questions, or 12 of 20 for Ethics.

Which module is the hardest?

It depends on your background. Segregated Funds and Annuities is the most calculation-heavy. Ethics leaves the least margin, because each of its 20 scored questions is worth 5%. Read the Ethics module guide early.

Can I write the exam online?

In New Brunswick (or in person in Fredericton), Nova Scotia and PEI, through Durham College. Not in Ontario, BC or Manitoba, where sittings are in person. Alberta lists in-person centres in Calgary and Edmonton. See the exam day guide.

Is there material available during the exam?

Administrators describe approved study material provided on an electronic reader, though their descriptions differ (closed-book in Alberta, open-book with an e-book in New Brunswick). Prepare as if you had none.

How many times can I rewrite a module?

Up to 3 rewrites under the CISRO policy, 24 hours apart, while your course certificate is valid. After a fourth failure, you wait one year and retake the course. PEI applies a six-month wait after the third attempt. Full details in LLQP retake rules.

Does CISRO publish pass rates by module?

CISRO publishes national results reports, but the most recent one we checked does not label its module columns clearly enough to attribute a rate to a module. We do not publish module pass rates for that reason.

When was the curriculum last updated?

The latest finalized harmonized curriculum on the CISRO site was revised in May 2015. No 2025 or 2026 update is listed there.

Licensing

What are the steps to become a life insurance agent outside Québec?

Complete an approved LLQP course, pass the provincial exams, meet the province’s post-exam requirements (sponsorship, E&O, supervision depending on the province) and apply for the licence within the deadline. The guide by province compares them.

How long is the course certificate valid?

12 months from course completion, under the CISRO policy. You need it to register for the exams and for any rewrite.

How long do I have to apply for the licence after passing?

One year from your first pass in Ontario, within one year of passing in BC, and 12 months for a paid application in Alberta. In New Brunswick, exam marks are valid for 12 months.

Do I need a sponsor?

In Ontario, a licensed insurer must sponsor a new agent for the first two years. Alberta’s application requires sponsor approval. Nova Scotia requires an insurer endorsement. Other provinces publish their own conditions.

What does it cost to get licensed in Ontario?

FSRA lists $170 for a two-year licence and $19.15 for the Triton criminal record check. Course, Durham College exam fees and E&O premiums come on top. See the Ontario guide.

Will I be supervised as a new agent?

In BC, for at least 24 months (12 with a CLU, CFP or RFP). In Saskatchewan, agents licensed after January 1, 2020 are supervised until they have 50 placed policies and one year as a licensee.

I am licensed in Québec. Can I work in another province?

Expect to show the common-law Ethics module. New Brunswick, for example, requires Québec candidates to prove module 112. Ask the regulator of the province you are moving to.
